Forvik: a new country?

We are always on the look out for changes that affect our mapping, especially the creation of a new country. A recent news story that caught our attention, is the plan by a pensioner in Shetland to create a new state out of the tiny island of Forewick Holm, on the west coast of the Shetland Isles.

There are other similar 'micronations' which have claimed independence, but not gained international recognition. To make a decision of nation status we assess the response of the international community, the official UK position (as represented by the FCO), UN recognition, advice from our expert consultants and the consensus view of our own Cartographic Policy Committee. We will not be adding the so called Crown Dependency of Forvik as a new country to our maps quite yet.

Despite his lack of official backing, he has still received wide press coverage
