Collins London Streetfinder Mapping for ESRI Map Book cover

If you were the CEO of the world's largest GIS company, and had the personal choice of map to put on the front cover of your map book, which one would you choose?

Jack Dangermond of ESRI Inc., and the man who has been described as “the Bill Gates of the GIS world”, had exactly that decision to make. Every year since 1984, ESRI have published a Map Book to showcase the best of the mapping displayed at the ESRI International User Conference – the world’s largest Geographic Information conference, held annually in San Diego and attracting over 14,000 delegates. ESRI claim that their Map Book is the only publication dedicated to acknowledging the important and innovative accomplishments of GIS users around the world.

Dangermond had several hundred candidates to choose from for the cover of the forthcoming volume 24 of the Map Book, and the one he actually selected was the Collins London Streetfinder mapping. The mapping chosen shows Central London, but this is just an extract from the 20 foot x 15 foot wall map covering the whole of Greater London that was exhibited at the ESRI User Conference, and is now displayed at the ESRI headquarters in California.

He's obviously been impressed by the sheer level of detail shown on the mapping, and the huge amount of care taken to compile and update it. The ability to display the information it contains with the utmost clarity, despite the severe constraints of space involved in depicting one of the world's major cities at this scale, is a major achievement for the Collins Geo team based in Cheltenham, and one of which they can be very proud.

Graham Gill, Cartographic Director, Collins Geo.
