The BCS John C. Bartholomew Award 2010 Winner

This coveted British Cartographic Society award is presented for originality and excellence in the field of thematic (non-topographic, 1:100,000 and smaller) cartography, with the emphasis on effective communication of the intended theme or themes. Collins Geo, through CollinsBartholomew and the family of the late John C. Bartholomew support this award.

Winner
Geo-Genealogy of Irish Surnames
Dr. Kenneth Field, Principal Lecturer in GIS at
Kingston University London, and Dr. Linda Beale a Research Fellow in the Dept of Epidemiology and Public Health at Imperial College London.

The map illustrates Irish surnames with historic and numeric importance to the counties of Ireland. Surnames from the 1890 Irish census are geo-located with font size relating to the number of people with that surname according to birth counts.

● Generally a good choice of cartographic design techniques, colours, etc, and also good editorial control over area to be mapped, insets, etc
● Overall an excellent solution to a very ambitious project
